Carmen is the most popular opera in the world, and one of the most moving—a searing tragedy of a woman who confronts her fate to assert her freedom to the very end.
In 2022, Marie-Nicole Lemieux made a historic debut in the title role, despite the challenging context of the health crisis. To overcome that difficult time and to offer you once again, in the best possible conditions, Jean-Louis Grinda’s beautiful production, a swift revival was essential. This revival promises to be spectacular, with two exceptional casts and Leo Hussain at the podium, an ideal conductor in the French repertoire.

TRANSMISSION AT THE HEART OF THE RADIO FRANCE FESTIVAL PROJECT
A masterclass? A special moment shared between young professionals and established artists—masters, in the truest and finest sense of the word. Behind the term masterclass lie these exceptional encounters whose purpose is to pass on knowledge, inspire, and encourage the next generation.
Born in Béziers, Marianne Crebassa began studying piano at the École de musique in Agde and at the Conservatoire of Sète, before turning to vocal training at the Conservatoire of Montpellier, where she also studied musicology. Spotted by René Koering, she performed rare works such as Fedra by Pizzetti and Zaira by Bellini as part of the Radio France and Montpellier Festival, where she is a frequent guest.
Since then, she has appeared in a wide repertoire ranging from Dorabella (Così fan tutte) to Mélisande and Angelina (La Cenerentola), from Fantasio to Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust, not to mention contemporary music: she created the role of Charlotte Kann in Charlotte Salomon by Marc-André Dalbavie at the Salzburg Festival.
Marianne Crebassa recently recorded Séguédilles (Mompou, Falla, Bizet…) with the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse conducted by Ben Glassberg, and, together with pianist Fazıl Say, an album entitled Secrets (Debussy, Ravel, Fauré, Duparc), which also includes a ballad composed by Fazıl Say.
On 3 July, 2025, seven gifted and promising SIAA Foundation scholarship holders will present their talents to the audience: Lithuanian mezzo Wyss (Sidlauskaite), Lithuanian baritone Romanas Kudriašovas, Chinese soprano Fan Zhou, Chinese tenor Lian Wang, Lithuanian soprano Sandra Sarikovaite, French mezzo Léontine Maridat-Zimmerlin and South African bass Msimelelo Mbali. They will perform timeless opera masterpieces – iconic arias by Verdi, Mozart, Bellini, Rossini, Bizet, Donizetti, Puccini, Strauss, and other world opera classics.
A magical and philosophical tale, L’Île de Merlin or The World Turned Upside Down is a one-act opéra-comique composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck and premiered in Vienna in 1758. The libretto, in French, is a version revised in 1753 by Louis Anseaume of the comedy interwoven with vaudevilles Le Monde renversé, originally created by Lesage and d’Orneval at the Opéra-Comique, Foire Saint-Laurent, in 1718.
Myriam Marzouki’s staging embraces play in all its forms: romantic rivalry and games of seduction, the atmosphere of a casino with dice games... For the duration of this delightfully whimsical performance, the Bizet Hall is transformed into a 1930s café. Like a nod to Tex Avery’s zany cartoons, absurdity and humor engage in dialogue with political critique and social satire.
The modernization of the dialogues by Sébastien Lepotvin for this 2025 production, and the musical updates by Guillemette Daboval and Sammy El Ghadab (artists from the Académie), preserve the rhythm and spirit of the original work, which combines lightheartedness with philosophical depth.
